The more I research Idahos rich history, the more fascinated I am.

These may look reminiscent of giant honey pots but we assure there's much more to it. Let's take a look at the history behind this intriguing site.

Located just off Highway 28 at Birch Creek, in Lemhi County right here in Idaho, are an intriguing set of 'beehive' shaped kilns. These 20 feet high kilns were purposefully built in the early 1800s, using local stone and wood, for the Nicholia valley miners.

These miners worked with silver and lead and required lots of charcoal in order to use their smelting machines. These kilns would supply the miners with the charcoal and business went on as usual. At one point, these kilns employed up to as many as two hundred workers.

Amazingly, these kilns only operated for a minimum of three years inclusively and were sadly abandoned to decay. There were initially sixteen kilns and restoration work attempted to salvage them, however only four remain today.

Access can be gained from the highway from Leadore and the site is visibly signposted.
