Quote from Angela on December 20, 2020, 8:48 pmTwas the night before Christmas when all thru' the house, not a creature was stirring....
Apart from these monstrosities!
Here we share some of the most popular festive lore menaces!
1. THE TOMTE
Swedish charactor 'Tomte' is originally portrayed as a good guy bearing gifts to children. He is said to be protector of crops and harvest and has been spotted hiding out in farmstead barns! He appears in the form of a small man who visits on Christmas Eve demanding a hot bowl porridge with butter. However if you don't leave the bowl waiting for him he will set about slaughtering the cattle!
2. LA PERE FOUETTARD
It is said that we all have an evil 'Doppelganger'. But what about Saint Nick? Does he have an evil counterpart? Folklore suggests La Pere Fouettard to be this very entity. Said to be linked to Saint Nicholas himself. Also known as Father Whipper. Shaggy beard and hooded robe he was said to kidnap children and hand them to the local butcher! Children would cower at the sight of him and literally run to save their own lives!
3. BELSNICKEL
German masked monster 'Belsnickel' is known to knock loudly on doors. He carries a satchel filled with festive gifts for the good children and leaves old sticks for those who have been naughty. Some are unfortunately kidnapped and dragged into local dark woods for punishment!
4. FRAU PERCHTA
Stemming from pre christian Pagan tradition 'Frau Perchta' is an Austrian witch known as an insidious wanderer. Frau Perchta won't hesitate to slit her victims from belly to throat, stuffing their innards with pebbles and hay, if they disrespect cultural rules. So children, be good!
5. STRAGGELE
Often linked as an accomplice to Frau Perchta. Straggele dishes out punishments without mercy. He is known as the more gruesome accomplice of the duo and takes enjoyment in ripping off limbs!
6. GRYLA
Hidden within the mountains of Iceland Gryla lives with her twelve 'lads' also known as the 'Yule Lads'. They are like an evil version of the seven dwarves! They steal and harass. These ancient mythological beings are anything but merry. Every Christmas Gryla sends her twelve yule lads out to collect wayward children to add to her meat stew!
7. KALLIKANTZAROS
These monstrous black tailed goblins hail over the isles of Greece, Bosnia, Turkey, Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria. During the twelve days of Christmas they set about ruining the festive season and will spoil anything in their sight. And you cannot stop them or they will take your life! So from December 25th through January 5th its best to lay low!
8. JOLAKOTTURINN
This predatory murderous Icelandic Yule feline is one cat you do not want to ever encounter! The giant house sized cat prowls streets looking for prey. With glowing yellow eyes and blade like whiskers he lurks snowy streets peering through candlelit windows. If he spots any children wearing disheveled or frayed and old clothing he eats them! So be sure to dress smartly over Christmas!
Happy holidays from all the team at Boise City Ghost Hunters!
