THE FRUITS OF LOVE AND LABOUR

We've all heard our Mothers often say "Eat your greens and drink your milk". And Idahoans ought to feel extra proud of their agricultural heritage.

Idaho has proudly harvested fruits vegetables, dairy and plants, from alfalfa to apples, corn, potatoes and cream!

Amidst constant crop price fluctuations, water shortages and weather extremes, throughout the years, farming establishments persisted, with determination, ensuring Idahos fields were nurtured with care, knowing that 'home grown' would always be best.

The early 1920s saw a substantial increase in amounts of dairy and livestock produce being shipped outland. However, the Depression had taken its toll, crop values decreased and economical commerce suffered. But through drought withered wheat and troublesome irrigation issues Idahos farmers still diligently persisted!

Can we take a moment to appreciate, just for a moment, what it must have been like out on those vast fields in the stark cold of winter when your livelihood depended on it, and this was all before irrigation systems were implemented.

The Wartime boom in 1941 once again saw economy thriving in the fields and valleys. Demands were high for our finest produce, specifically from Southern California, who showed particular interest in Idahos cooperative creameries, hay and butter products. You see these flavours did not just happen, but were created by dedicated workers and it showed!

Jerome Co Operative Creamery (pictured below) which is now called the Commercial Creamery Co., was founded in 1908 and still serves many clients in over thirty countries today.

Throughout the years Idaho has established reputable working relations with many noteable industries, locally and internationally. But let's not forget how it all started. Idahos real workers were the farmers who toiled tirelessly, no matter what the weather, they worked endlessly and harvested passionately.

Such knowledge truly gives a deeper appreciation to the fresh produce we can proudly call 'homegrown' today.
