Tryon Creek State Natural Area, is located just fifteen minutes from downtown Portland Oregon.

This forest spans 645 acres and is the only State park located centrally in a major metropolitan area.

Socrates Tryon Senior was one of Oregons very first physicians. Tryon, with his wife and son, moved here from Hawaii in 1849 and built his home right here.

After Tryon passed away his family resided at the home until 1874 and later sold it to the Oregon Iron Company who made some outstanding improvements including extended wetlands and additional mountain trails.

In 1975 the park name was changed from Tryon Park to Tryon Creek State Natural Area.

The park is open to the public today and offers over eight miles of spectacular riding trails and nature hikes.

At night many outdoor enthusiasts report hearing audible disembodied conversations accompanied by the sounds of horses hooves running by, said to be the restless spirits of the Tryon family and their horses believed to residually haunt the forests.

Many visitors describe detecting the aroma of freshly cut wood and sighting ghostly apparitions of the original loggers who were once pioneers here.

Astonishingly, some of these apparitions have physically walked passed the living, quite casually, as if they are on the way to a hard days work.
