Have you ever heard of anything more heartbreaking than a fairytale castle left to decay? 

Located just atop an enchanting vineyard, in the sleepy 200 strong population of Vitzenburg, lies the most breathtaking castle you will ever see. Its neo renaissance beauty emanates far and wide. However its owner abandoned it to sadly decay. Described as one of the most elaborately decorated castles ever known.

Why is this castle so well known and loved? 

Dating back to early 9th century and originally used as a convent, its hallways once buzzed with activity where a silence resides.

The castle has seen many different owners and its generous 20 square metres has seen much reconstruction. Baron Munchhausen once lived here. He was known as the 'Baron of Lies' as he would often concoct wild and unimaginable stories.

The castle survived World War 2. American tankers at her gates the soldiers gained entrance in order to remove opposing infiltrating foreign refugees.

But then came the nazi troops who claimed to come in peace, yet swiftly relocated Baron Munchaussen to one of their bases, the nearby Buchenwald concentration camp, where he sadly died.

The castle was left in the hands of local farmers and tradesmen and eventually became the property of a local Trust. 

The castle saw much death in 1492 due to a fire and is believed to be actively haunted by those who lost their lives. Visitors have reported eery voices and shadow figures gracing the corridors.

In 2013 movie makers recognised the castle as a perfect setting for a trilogy of magical childrens movies, 'Bibi & Tina', Bibi is the character of a little witch girl.

Access can be gained into the castle today for a reasonable fee if pre arranged.
