Idaho Home of the Worlds First National Park | Historical Yellowstone Scientific Expedition | Ferdinand Hayden | Historical | Idaho | BoiCGH

Science, parks and history.

It all started with a Massachusetts boy with a fascination with nature. His name was Ferdinand V Hayden.

Ferdinand went on to become head of the US Geological and Geographical Survey and in 1871 he headed a scientific expedition through Utah, Idaho and Montana, completing at the Yellowstone Basin.

Yellowstone Basin took it's rightful place as the worlds very first National Park!

Ferdinands expedition was nothing less that extraordinary! He interacted with rugged mountain tribes, was met by other explorers and camped in some truly wild and vast terrain and valleys.

Accompanying Ferdinand were two botanists, a zoologist, a meteorologist, a topographer, an agricultural statistician, a photographer and many more support staff.

Archeological studies revealed that human occupancy in the Yellowstone Valleys dates back over 11,000 years.

Throughout his expedition, Ferdinand continually kept in contact with friends including his mentor Spencer Baird, geologist George Allen, mineralogist Albert Peale and even his hometown newspaper publicists, frequently updating each of his scientific findings.

Scientific circles became excited upon hearing some of Ferdinands discovery quotes such as

"THE GEYSERS OF ICELAND SINK INTO INSIGNIFICANCE IN COMPARISON WHEN COMPARED TO THE HOT SPRINGS OF YELLOWSTONE AND FIREHOLE BASINS".

Over the centuries Idaho has endeavoured to constantly discover, learn, educate, and document its outstanding vibrant historical journey and continues to do so.

And just like the sign post at the national park reads today, which perfectly encapsulates what Idaho truly stands for. The park sign reads

'FOR THE BENEFIT AND ENJOYMENT OF THE PEOPLE'.

Idaho is, and always will be, about community.

So why not visit Yellowstone National Park and re-live some amazing history and learn how Idaho is endeavouring to preserve these wonderful terrains. Or take a visit to view Garden Peak, located in the Blackfoot River Valley. This peak stands atop the Fort Hall Indian Reservations and was established in honour of the Hayden expedition.

Be sure to share your visitor experiences with us and let us know your favourite Idahoan pioneering moment or historical facts!.
