When Idaho first discovered the historical marvel of Petroglyphs (native Indian rock symbol carvings) at various locations in Idaho including the Priest, Salmon and Snake Rivers respectively, they called the scientists in!
These scientists embarked on utilising a carbon dating technique, to estimate just how far back these rock carvings dated. What they discovered was truly shocking. These carvings were over 12,000 years old.
Although historians are unable to decipher exactly which tribes were responsible for these wonderous etchings, what we do know is that these are intricate works of art primarily used as a means of communication.
Most of the petroglyphs discovered in Idaho were created by hand using primitive tools. The tools would tap into the basalt rocks, removing a surplus layer which in turn triggered an oxidation process. The oxidation process would then present the colour variation in the rocks.
Examination of the nature of the symbols would indicate tribes revealing every day matters such as hunting practices.
Some of these larger rock displays can be found at Swan Falls Dam (the hydroelectric dam which dates back to 1909) and Wees Bar, just south of Kuna, and Celebration Parks Guffey Bridge.
Celebration Park and Swan Falls Dam both offer tours. The trail from the Dam to Wees Bar is a wonderful twelve mile trip and would make a great family day out. Be sure to check out their websites.
