Controversial Romantic Royal Ghosts | John Brown at Balmoral Castle | Balmoral England | Paranormal | Historical | Haunting | United Kingdom | BoiCGH

Life isn't always a fairytale. The history of the British monarchy may be surrounded with castles, riches and grandeur but it is also steeped in tragedy, wars, death, love, conspiracy and murder. So it comes as no surprise that our royal family have witnessed and often reported to confidants, multiple hauntings and ghostly sightings. It would seem that not everything that happens in the past... stays in the past.

John Brown was a Scottish Personal Assistant and very close friend of Queen Victoria and is widely believed to still haunt Balmoral Castle to this day.

The nature of his relationship with Queen Victoria continues to be a controversial topic today with many speculating that they had longstanding romantic ties.

The Queen (present day) has actually reported seeing the ghost of John Brown wearing his tartan kilt numerous times, as have many other royal family members.

Queen Victorias husband, Prince Albert died unexpectedly in 1861 which  took a great toll on Victoria and she is said to have never fully recovered. John Brown became devoted to her offering his unconditional friendship and Victoria discovered much solace in him.

As a result Queen Victoria presented John with two valuable and much coveted medals of honour, one was 'Faithful Servant' also the 'Devoted Service' medal and commissioned a royal portrait canvas of him to be displayed at the castle.

Victoria's children resented the affection she held for John, rumour has it that they were aware the relationship was 'improper' and would refer to him as 'Mamas Lover'. Victoria of course would dismiss such comments as idle gossip.

In 1883 John died at age 56 at Windsor Castle. So it comes as no surprise that John refuses to leave the royal premises maybe he still searches the corridors for Victoria.

Taboo? Yes. However, evidently there are no boundaries when it comes to matters of the heart.
