Will The Grinch Steal Your Christmas?| Festive | Seasonal | Folklore
We've all heard of The Grinch. Is he really just a green fluffy dude intent on causing mischief and ruining Christmas? Let's take a little look at some of his history!
Created in 1955 the classic and much loved character The Gringe was created first featuring in a poetic work by Dr. Seus's called 'The Hoobub and The Grinch'.
Nobody would foresee the unimaginable astounding success of The Gringe and it went on to have two more specials made. 1977s 'Halloween is Grinch Night' and 1992s 'The Grinch - Cat In The Hat'.
On December 18th 1966 an animated adaptation of Dr. Seus's 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas' premiered on American television. This was the first time we got a glimpse of his vibrant green fur, as in the original book he was plain white.Â
The story of Dr. Seus's The Gringe was written in just one month. The storys aim was to project the message of material things being unimportant at Christmas time. Ironically, the Grinch initially sets out on a crazed festive spree taking gifts from homes in the night. However he discovers a change of heart and begins to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas.Â
AMAZING FACT : the 1966 premiered tv showing of The Gringe was narrated by Frankenstein himself ! the legend that was actor 'Boris Karloff'.
The Grinch tale has stood the test of time and merchandise still flies off the shelves every festive season! The Seus Estates claim that, although being offered many merchandise and rights offers, including offers from Century Fox and Jack Nicholson, they refuse to sell! Universal later struck up a deal hence the introduction of the popular christmas movie starring Jim Carey!
