Northumberland is steeped in rich history including bloody battles and broken hearts!

One rainy night in 1790, William Winter sought shelter at the house of Margaret Crozier, he later murdered her.

Winters was publicly tried and hung at Stengs Cross which is now the site of the ancient historically commemorative boundary stone.

Many have reported seeing Winters ghost appearing on the hills, some believe his spirit now mourns regretfully the wrongful actions he took against unfortunate Margaret. 

Furthermore, three horse skulls were found at the Steng Cross site, which many believe indicates sacrificial ritual activities. The picture below illustrates where William Winters body hung from.

The grisly wooden head relic is aptly named Winters Gibbet, a stark reminder of a harrowing crime. 

The surrounding farmland is said to be haunted by 'the brown man of the moors', many describe him as a dwarf like figure with glowing red eyes. Folklore says he protects the land from harm and punishes those who trespass.
