Al Capone Was Haunted by Ghosts | Chicago | Paranormal | Historical | Haunting | America | BoiCGH

In 1925 Alphonse Gabriel Capone was anointed and inducted, by Italian/American mobster Johnny Torrio, as 'Head of The Chicago Outfit' which controlled the gambling and prostitution scene. He reigned for seven years. His high status initiated a luxurious lifestyle which caught the attention of police authorities resulting in his arrest for tax evasion, carrying a concealed weapon and underground bootlegging/illegal alcohol trading.

Expelled from school at just fourteen years old for striking a female teacher on the face, and becoming involved in gangs, it was evident from a young age that Capone was predestined to take a different path in life.

Capone earned the name 'Scarface' after being slashed on the cheek by Frank Galluccio after verbally insulting Franks sister while on door security of a dance club. However, Capone was also a much respected business man, trusted friend and had also worked as a bodyguard for Johnny Torrio. The two were protected by the Unione Sicilana, earlier known as the Italian-American National Union.

Regardless of physical and government protection, Al Capone repeatedly confided in close allies that he was being tormented by something 'out of his control'. He claimed he was being consistently haunted by ghosts which he believed may have been spirits of those killed in his gangster circles.

At their height of activity, The Outfit had over six hundred gangsters under their employment and had set up their headquarters at the Lexington Hotel (see our linked article below). It was here that Capone claims he witnessed ghostly apparitions peering from behind the luxuriously draped curtains, which would terrorise him at night. Also whilst serving time in the Atlanta Penitentiary and later on at Alcatraz, Capone reported he was tormented by ghosts in his cell.

Staff would often attend to him upon hearing his cries begging 'LEAVE ME ALONE, PLEASE PLEASE!'. Other prisoners would often hear Capone screaming during the night and having very real conversations with someone as if another person was in the cell with him.

Capone desperately hoped that upon his prison release the tormenting entities would leave him alone, however these episodes proved to continue on. Through desperation he reached out to mediums and physics in attempts to detach these spirits from himself but sadly attempts were futile. It is noted that his bodyguards became used to running into his bedroom at night upon hearing him screams of terror, only to find Capone alone and completely terrified claiming 'things' were with him.

Many were of the opinion that this haunting was the spirit of James 'Jimmy' Clark, a low ranking mobster who worked for George 'Bugs' Moran, who was fatally injured in the crossfire of the infamous Valentines Day Massacre (linked post below). It was general knowledge that Capone ordered the killing, as Bugsy was a long time rival, but these accusations were never officially proved.

Of course many questioned Capones sanity, but those who truly knew him wholeheartedly believed he was actually being terrorised by real ghosts.

What do you think? Could Capones past victims have been seeking their retribution through haunting him in life?

Capone was born on January 7th 1899, died 25th January 1947, and the world continues to respect the Boss, even after death. There will never be another Capone. He will always be revered and honoured amongst historical circles.
