Etiquette Headmistress Haunts The Queen Anne Hotel | San Francisco | Paranormal | Historical | Haunting | America | BoiCGH

This visually stunning Victorian mansion showcasing beautifully elaborate architecture, was built in 1890. Originally this was a 'school of etiquette for girls' located in Central San Francisco, not too far from Union Square and Chinatown.

It is suggested that the mansion was run by various owners over the years including a brothel boss, a church caretaker, and as a meeting place for exclusive secret societies. Staff believe previous members of these secret societies still reside here in spirit and often catch reflections of cloaked figures in mirrors, accompanied by icy cold blasts.

The building now runs as a hotel and there are 48 delightful rooms to choose from. However, please take note that this hotel is believed to be haunted by the ghost of previous headmistress, Miss Mary Lake.

However, unlike many other spirits known to roam San Francisco who are known to be vengeful, Miss Lake is one of the cities friendlier ghosts. All she wants is to ensure that everything is in its rightful place, she was an etiquette headmistress after all.

The infamous voodoo queen of San Francisco, Mary Ellen Pleasant, once lived just across the street from the building during the 1800s and many believe her ceremonies unleashed spirits who took up residence at the hotel and surrounding areas.

Miss Lake was alleged to have had a secret love affair with James Fair, known as 'slippery Jim', who was the Senator who funded the buildings construction. Mary vehemently denied the affair but this did not stop the media from running wild with the story. Newspapers published titles such as 'The Senator and School Mistress' and 'Cupid and Mr Fair'.

Room 410 is said to be particularly active as this was Miss Lakes former office space. Guests who have stayed in this room have reported a wide range of paranormal phenomena including waking up to discover they have been perfectly tucked in, not a blanket out of place.

One family stated they woke to find their luggage had been opened, all their clothing hung up in the wardrobes and towels perfectly arranged.

Mary was actually buried over 3000 miles away yet it is said her spirit continues to haunt the place she once loved so much. This is a classic example of a 'residual impression' haunting, where a spirit is 'emotionally' attached to a location.

Returning guests have described how they have seen mysterious shadow figures appear on their photographs taken whilst staying here.

Others have reported sighting of apparitions of children believed to be the original children who attended here, taught by Miss Lake.

I think Mary would appreciate how the building is being run today, a warm ambience, concierge, bellman and friendly staff await you.

Why not book a room and let us know if you experience anything paranormal.

A word of advice, if you stay here, mind your manners.
