New York has its fare share of folklore, however there are some things which are seemingly even more horrifying than tales of old.

'14 West 10th Street' in Greenwich Village New York, also known as The House of Death, has a deeply dark history yet is located on one of New Yorks most picturesque blocks.

The building, which is now privately owned, was erected during the 1800s the property has been home to many of New Yorks more affluent families and even the elite. This Greek revival era home is known as 'New Yorks most macabre house' and is reportedly haunted by at least twenty two spirits. 

The most disturbing events surrounding this property are those which took place here in 1987. 46 year old, Joel Steinberg, a disbarred New York defence attorney, was accused of violently and fatally attacking his illegally adopted six year old daughter Elizabeth/Lisa. After the horrific ordeal, he casually went about his day and even met up with friends for drinks.

The little girl was discovered and taken to the emergency room at St Vincents Hospital where she died three days later. It later unfolded that neglect and abuse had been ongoing for many years and that Steinberg was involved in narcotic use.

The story exploded on worldwide media and 14 West 10th Street became known as 'The House of Death' and 'The House of Terror'. Steinberg was convicted for first degree manslaughter and second degree murder. Astonishingly, Steinberg was released from prison in 2004.

Monsters really do walk amongst us.

Paranormal investigators have stated they witnessing a ghost cat running about the property, also the spirit of a little girl and a lady dressed in a white gown.

Many believe the little ghost girl to be the spirit of the very same child who was so mercilessly attacked here.

Later on in 1937, 14 West 10th Street was converted from a family home into ten separate accommodation apartments. Actress Jan Bryant Bartell once lived in one of the top floor apartments, along with her husband, and the two claimed there to be a very sinister presence about the place. They would often witness unexplained phenomena, including what they described as a 'monstrous moving shadow and paranormal visions'.

What if they were not visions at all but very real entities?

The top floor was originally used a 'servants quarters'. Could these shadows and creepy presences be the servant staff from so long ago residually haunting the home today?

It has also been noted that literary genius Mark Twain lived here from 1900 to 1901. There have been multiple sightings of a transparent ghost like apparition wearing a white tailored suit walking the main staircase and also spotted on the first floor. Many speculate that this is truly the ghost of Mark Twain himself.

One family claim that they witnessed Twains ghost sitting by the fireplace and he whispered to them "i have a problem, you see i gotta settle down here" before swiftly vanishing out of sight leaving the family flabbergasted.
