Poveglia Island, in the Venetian Lagoon Italy, is widely regarded as one of the most haunted locations in all of Europe due to its fascinating history. The island was primarily used as a quarantine station due to fears of contracting the rampant plagues during the 1800s.

This meant that incoming ships to the region had to moor to the island to ensure nobody on board became ill. Sadly many healthy sailors came into contact with infected islanders resulting in many deaths.

There are over 100,000 bodies buried here.

The island was later used as an insane asylum during the 1940s but was abandoned in the 1960s when it was discovered that treatments were nothing but inhumane abuse and torture.

The entities who linger here are rumored to be malevolent in nature and have been known to physically lash out at the living. Some have sustained scratch marks deep enough to have drawn blood.

It comes as no surprise that hundreds of visitors report terrifying ghost sightings, strange creepy sounds and an overall feeling of fear and unease.

This island is said to be ‘only for hardiest of paranormal investigators’.
