Gaolers Mews in Gastown Vancouver has an amazing historical past. The Mews is tinged with a tales of timeless romance and believed to be haunted by multiple active spirits.

The jail section was destroyed in the Great Fire of Vancouver but renovations introduced an array of modern cosmopolitan shops, bars and eateries. Locals may perhaps be more familiar with the establishments of L'Abbatoire restaurant, Blakes Coffee Parlour and The Irish Heather bar, eerily located near Blood Alley.

Built in the 1800s, and comprising its very own 'hangmans courtyard', the Mews served as a jailhouse and public execution site. Many believe the alley to be haunted by those who were executed here.

Retail staff often report hearing unexplained voices and have even been approached by full body apparitions. Repairmen often leave early on account of their tools mysteriously disappearing. 

The most sinister reports are that of a tall man dressed in black who visibly walks through brick walls. Could it be that this spirit is actually walking through what used to be an original doorway, pre renovations?

Most heartbreaking is the sighting of 'the grieving woman' a spirit wearing a long black dress who crosses the alley repeatedly, she appears visibly distressed, crying as she tirelessly searches for her long lost lover, who may have been executed at the gallows here.

There has been much debate on whether this is a 'residual' haunting (caused by energy left behind, like a record replaying past events) or 'intelligent' (when a spirit interacts in real time with present day beings).

I suppose the saying is true that there is a special kind of love which never truly dies.
