Welcome to the Idaho Insane Asylum.

The Idaho Insane Asylum was built in 1886, about one mile from Blackfoot. The asylum was later renamed South Idaho Sanitarium and today operates as The State Hospital South, a psychiatric centre specialising in Adult Behavioural Health.

The asylum was intended to ‘received all insane persons from Northern Idaho’ and accommodated approximately 300 patients. One of the buildings was named ‘Centre for the Feeble Minded and Epileptics’. This was also one the very first medical centres to perform female sterilisation.

On November 24, 1889, a fire broke out here and seven patients died. Their bodies were never discovered.

But did you know this location is known to be actively haunted today?

If we step back in time to 130 years ago this site, which now resembles a modern day campus, was a facility filled with real life horror stories.

Patients here were actively and intentionally tortured and abused then buried on the grounds outside. The site is today the State Hospital South Cemetery.

Renovation and construction crews who worked here refused to go back inside to retrieve their tools because they were genuinely ‘afraid of the ghosts’.

During its early years, many patients would escape and some would wander the grounds at night desperately looking for help.

But it was never too long before they would be pulled back inside, behind dark locked doors, and undergo unyielding punishments.

Are these entities angry at their mistreatment?

Mysterious mists, disembodied voices crying out through the night and floating light anomalies, which seemingly have cognition (consciousness: moving with intent) are frequently encountered here.

Could this be those neglected patients lingering the grounds today?

Of course today the hospital is a highly respected and renowned medical facility which works in conjunction with families and communities. 

But that doesn't stop the continual reports of unexplained phenomena sighted on the surrounding grounds.
