Prior to World War II, Spanish Pyrenees Basque communities settled first right here in Idaho. The majority of settlers were traditional sheepherders. With them they brought domestic fowl, tomatoes, garlic, corn and cattle.

To their delight they encountered Spanish speaking Americans which stimulated a welcome and steady regeneration of economy and produce.

After 1910 farming was established on many of the desert lands which brought in many workers from as far as Wales and the Balkans. Many taking up residence in nearby Pocatello and Idaho Falls. French Canadian furtrappers ventured here establishing their very own communities of Coeur d'Alene and Boise.

By 1911, approximately 400,000 Japanese immigrants relocated to America. The majority became established in Hawaii, with around 180,000 settling in Idaho. Many originated from the Kumamoto area, and set about labour work on our local railroads.

Over 8000 Indians travelled here, their Chiefs titles being reflected in their County names. Let's look at them here.

Blackfoot, White Bird, Paiute, Plateau, Nez Perce, Benewah, Shoshone, Bannock, Kootenai, Kamiah, Tendoy, Lapwai, Weippe, Kooskia and Picabo.

Idaho solidified the establishments of four native Indian reservations. These are Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene (Northern sector), Fort Hall (Pocatello) and Duck Valley (Owyhee). Also the Kootenai and Kalispell enclaves of Cusick (Montana border) and Bonners Ferry.

Idaho became known for honourably embracing cultural diversity and is now hailed as one of the worlds most historically rich nations.
