Krampus The Christmas Demon | Fireside | Tradition | Seasonal | Folklore | Community
Quote from Angela on December 6, 2020, 12:31 amThe tale of Krampus has been told for over 500 years. Known as 'the dark side' of Christmas. This menacing seasonal entity has often been described as half demon half goat.
Originating from Austria. The German word Krampen means 'Claw'. In Norse tradition he is said to be the son of hell, keeper of the underworld.
He is everything Saint Nicholas is not! Rattling his chains, clothed in the hide of goats and sheep, a pointed tongue, horns, a bunch of sticks to strike misbehaving children with!
Folklore suggests that the tradition began in Germany where December 5th was known as Krampus Night. Children would leave their shoes hoping St Nicholas would leave presents next to them. However, if you woke to a lump of coal instead, you better hide because Krampus would later visit and drag you to his dark underground lair where he would admonish his punishment which may involve drowning or even eating you!
Even today some areas of the Alpine Austrian region acknowldege the tradition by hosting Krampus Runs also known as the 'Perchtenlauf' or 'Perchten Run', where they will don their villainous horns and dress in Krampus cloaks. Many knock at doors and hand out treats. Some towns tried to stop these runs from taking place complaining they were 'immoral'. The runs still take place today, some with accompanying St Nicholas folks.
Some people truly dislike this folklore legend whilst others state they enjoy the balance of rewarding good with good (Santa) and bad with bad (Krampus).
It is said Krampus shakes tin bells as he approaches! So if you hear those bells you better run!
