Macabre Dining and Active Poltergeists | Restaurant One If By Land Two If By Sea | Greenwich Village New York City | Paranormal | Historical | Haunting | America | BoiCGH

New York, the city that never sleeps, if you give it a chance, really will keep you up all…night…long.

Home to decades of crime, murder and some truly sinister history, it comes as no surprise that there are literally hundreds of reports of unexplained phenomena each and every day. New York restaurant One If By Land, Two If By Sea, Barrow Street, New York was voted the ‘most romantic eatery in New York ’ and snagged a Forbes ‘Classic Dining’ Award.

Baby grand piano, private garden and candlelight, an exquisitely charming building known as a favoured wedding engagement proposal hotspot.

Let’s take a look at its history.

Established in 1973, this venue was originally a carriage house with attached barn area used by State Attorney General Aaron Burr during 1790. Burr was known for being outspoken and was said to have made many enemies during his political career, including Alexander Hamilton whom he often vehemently argued with.

Hamilton initiated damaging rumours regarding the intimacy of Burrs relationship with his daughter, it sparked much gossip and heresay. Hamilton petitioned that Burr should not be left holding the reigns of Government and was a ‘very dangerous man’.

Burr lost the election and blamed it on Hamiltons damaging comments and portrayal of him to the public. Infuriated, on July 11th 1804, he challenged Hamilton to a dual out on a field, and there he shot him dead. Burrs political career was over and he lost much of his property, including the carriage house which is the refurbished restaurant we see today.

Burr lived at the carriage house with his wife Theodosia Bartow Prevost and his young daughter. Sadly his wife passed away due to illness. Many believe that Burr and his daughter actively haunt the restaurant today. Many females report feeling something touching their earrings and stroking their hair.

Are these not the actions of a curious little girl inquisitively reaching out from the supernatural?

There are tunnels which run under the building which were used during the Revolutionary War to smuggle contraband and fugitives. The carriage house later operated as a movie house and also a bar.

In 1970 restoration work began showcasing treasures such as original hand welded horseshoes, coins, antique bottles and a hitching post which is visible at the bar area today.

But did you know this place is allegedly haunted by at least twenty spirits and it is said that ‘the ghosts are livelier than the entertainment’. Unexplained disappearances, prostitution and death have all played their parts here.

One staff member claimed to being violently pushed down a set of stairs by unseen hands and believes he encountered a poltergeist entity. If a poltergeist entity feels like you are intruding, you're in trouble and need to safeguard your immediate surroundings as these entities will physically attack and may cause harm to your person.

Many couples who dine by candlelight here have described some level of paranormal activity surrounding them and painting will spontaneously fall from the walls. Staff believe that Burr and daughter Theodosia enjoy lingering here supernaturally, as well as a lady in black who died from a broken neck when she fell down the buildings stairs.

Another ghost is known as the Blacksmiths daughter, Flo Ziefield, who haunts the Constitution room and stairwells.

Is Flo responsible for the poltergeist activity here?

All we know is that has to be historical macabre dining at its very finest.
