The word ‘polihale’ means ‘underworld/sacred ruins’.

Polihale State Park and beach lies on the western shores of Kauai Island, Kekaha, Hawaii, just North of the Pacific Missile Range Facility.

The ancient mountains lie so close to this beach park that, during the night, visitors often hear the wild mountain goats bleating from the ridges.

Kauai is a paradise like haven known as The Garden Isle due to its rich tropical foliage.

The closest city is Kekaha and Polihale State Park can only be reached by an old historical sugar cane road. At fifteen miles long, the shoreline is one of the vastest dunes on the island.

This area was traditionally a sparsely populated area, many lived in the surrounding caves.

The beach hosts one of the most sacred sites in Hawaii, The Polihale Heiau, the burial land of Chief Polihale.

The shoreline hosts a whole array of reported phenomena and tales of encounters with the supernatural. There have been many burials amidst these sand dunes and local folklore suggests that beach is a known portal where departed souls leave one realm and go forth unto the next. 

Local lore tells that Chief Polihale had a daughter whose beauty was unparalleled. She was sought by many men, and pursued by the first of the four Polynesian Gods to arrive in Hawaii, a deity known as Ku.

Legends states that Ku became obsessed with her. He continually craved her affection. To get close to her, Ku took the form of a white wolf and lingered near the pond where she bathed with her fair maidens.

Unable to withstand the distance between them any longer Ku approached her father, Chief Polihale, and requested his daughters’ hand in marriage. 

Chief Polihale vehemently declined his wishes.

Ku became angry during the confrontation and swiftly took the form of a vicious black dog and growled a curse of death upon the Polihale people and immediately set off to hunt down innocent local folk.

As Chief Polihale cried up to the skies ‘God save my people’, two mighty sea birds descended down from the clouds and killed Ku, granting peace and safety to all on the island.

The expanse today stands as a testament some unmoveable legends.

Hundreds of visitors claim experiences with the paranormal at this location.

Many have reported being actively chased by shadow entities. 

It is suggested that all those who had no family waiting in the afterlife for them, were destined to roam the shorelines for eternity.

One little boy died and a Priest laid his body to rest in a nearby chapel The next day the boy had gone.

Could he be one of the shadow entities seen here once darkness falls?

These manifestations are known as the Night Walkers and local communities warn tourists: Never disturb them or make eye contact with them. Let them pass by.

These apparitions have been known to stop and interact with family left behind, imparting words of wisdom, guidance and light.
