Spooky Foghorn Warnings and Cries for Help at Sheffield Island Lighthouse | Norwalk Connecticut | Paranormal | Historical | Haunting | America | BoiCGH

Is there anything more hauntingly beautiful than the mysterious tales of old lighthouses?

Sheffield Island Lighthouse (pictured below) is located on the Norwalk Connecticut coast, one of Americas most scenically stunning coastlines.

This 10 room, Victorian style, lighthouse was erected in 1862 as a beacon which aided ships towards Connecticuts magnificent Sheffield Isles. Today it is filled with period furnishings and offers guided tours. Read on to discover its spooky history.

It is believed this lighthouse is actively haunted today. In 1972 the original lighthouse keeper fell to his death, the circumstances remain a mystery.

However, it is suggested that the entity who haunts the lighthouse today is that of  Captain Robert Sheffield who first purchased the island during the early 1800s. Captain Sheffield loved playing musical instruments and many visitors today report the distant sounds of unexplained melodies!

In 1991 a Site Preservation archeologist who was working here stated he heard very real and audible 'cries for help' and the eery sound of foghorns which is rather unsettling considering that there are no longer any operational foghorns on the island.

Foghorns were originally used to warn incoming ships of navigational, or other, unseen hazards amidst foggy conditions.

Could these mysterious sounds be the residual warnings of yesteryear?

Or is Captain Sheffield trying to actively warn us of something else which may be considered an unseen danger there today?

The lighthouse was officially deactivated in 1902 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, from May through September the lighthouse offers guided tours.
