The Ghostly Hitchhikers | Route 26 | Poland, Maine | Paranormal | Historical | Haunting | America | BoiCGH

State Route 26 located in Poland, Maine, stretches 95 miles from downtown Portland to the New Hampshire border.

This major, inter regional, route dates back to 1922 when the numbered road marking system was first implement in New England.

In 1996 road modifications were carried out following heightened concerns regarding dangerous segments of road.

Throughout its existence the route has become infamous for creepy tales of phantom hitchhikers.

The first is the spirit of the young bride of George Knight who, in 1856, was stabbed to death at a nearby farmhouse just off route 11. Her escape from that farmhouse is still seen today as she manifests and residually runs along the highway desperately seeking help.

As she approaches vehicles she is known to offer predictive warnings of impending danger to those who pick her up, before vanishing as a mist.

Another version of the tales tells that the spirit of a young girl who was trying to make it to her prom night, and accepted a ride from a cold blooded killer. She is seen standing lifeless at the roadside near the Poland Spring Inn, wearing a blood drenched prom dress.

Is she still awaiting a ride to the dance?

So then, could it be that these timeless ghostly entities coexist along this historically haunted highway today?
