St Katherines Abbey is a historical 13th century Augustinian Abbey located in Limerick County, Ireland.

The Abbey was frequented by King Henry VIII and founded on land donated by John Fitzthomas of Connello of Shanid Castle.

This may be the land of the leprechauns, but it is cloaked in the macabre, with tales of a satanic nun who once resided here in these very valleys during the sixteenth century.

The nuns sacristy was located at the Abbey and became known as the Black Hag Cell. 

However, this nun practiced witchcraft, black magic and other depravities.

Every night local farmers would hear her performing satanic rituals, black magic spells, followed by piercing screams which would echo across the hills.

One night, her body was discovered, her face contorted.

The Earl of Desmond buried her in the surrounding marshlands.

Many believe the devil finally came to take her soul but that her spirit haunts the site today.

If you are in this area after night fall, beware as the old hag is known to creep up on, and scream at, the unsuspecting living.
