The Barrens (2012) | Movie | Entertainment | Horror | Folklore | Review | Community

I recently watched the 2012 The Barrens. As a fan of True Blood I appreciated the talents of actor Stephen Moyer who stars in the film. I really enjoy movies which are linked to folklore and legend. This movie was inspired by the terrifying legend of the Jersey Pine Devil which originated in New Jersey back in the early 1700s.

The movie takes us on the journey of a family who set out on a camping trip only to discover there are some roads better left untravelled. Initially, the family are unaware of the tales of the Jersey Devil, and upon learning of the locations history they laugh it off as legend similar to the Lochness monster.  The Camp site warden directs them to go 'just up ahead and through the trees'.

However, soon after, sinister events unfold all around them and the family literally end up fearing for their lives. With children in tow and nothing but camping gear for protection, the odds are not looking good for this family.

From the very first opening this movie packs a punch, engaging the audience.

I enjoyed the cinematography and soundtrack too.
